WHO I AM
I am Halvor Kvandal, a Norwegian philosopher of religion, researcher, educator, author, and podcaster.
My work lives at the intersection of philosophy, science, religion, and human experience. I explore why we believe what we believe, how our minds make sense of the world, and what our deepest questions reveal about human nature.
But beyond my academic work, I am also a husband, father, traveler, enthusiastic reader, and lover of museums.
I believe curiosity is one of the most valuable things we can cultivate. It encourages us to question our assumptions, understand different perspectives, and discover how much there is still to learn.
WHAT DRIVES MY CURIOSITY?
My research focuses on the cognitive and evolutionary science of religion. I am fascinated by how human beings develop religious beliefs, imagine supernatural agents, and create narratives that give meaning to their experiences.
As an associate professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway and a fellow of the International Society for Science and Religion, I have the opportunity to explore these questions through research, teaching, and conversations across disciplines.
My interests also extend to human origins, the psychology of narratives, Mesoamerican archaeology, childhood development, cultural diversity, prejudice, and the nature of awe and wonder.
What connects these interests is a simple but powerful question:
What can we learn about ourselves by exploring the ways human beings think, believe, and experience the world?
The Many Sides of My Work
The Many Sides of My Work
My curiosity takes different forms. From academic research and teaching to writing, traveling, and podcasting, each experience offers a different way to explore what it means to be human.

I believe some of the most meaningful ideas emerge when people with different perspectives take the time to listen to one another.
Whether you are interested in my research, books, podcast, teaching, or potential collaborations, I would be happy to hear from you.
I welcome thoughtful conversations, academic exchange, podcast opportunities, and ideas worth exploring.
